Well I'd like to vote for A B and D, as in, I don't care about any kind of transfer but ideally I'd like to keep at least my primary name (but if not it's no big deal). I wanted to ask the founders whether they would dump progress and opt for innovation or keep things stale for fear of a community backlash, but judging from this thread most people are in agreement*.

*Edit - maybe that was a tad premature. (50% C)

If it is an entirely new game, NO!

Not only is it a shouldn't be, it is a probably could not even happen to begin with so don't get your hopes up type of thing anyway.

Having said that, I think names and possibly titles should be able to be transferred (and/or perhaps something like "Descendent of X" title)

The option would be nice. Those who don't like it can just not use it.

Case and point: Bulder's Gate II lets you import characters from Bulder's Gate I. There goes your silly new-game-has-to-have-fresh-start argument.

Yes.It's truly the only reason as to why I play this game. The fact that its:

A.A free Online RPG
B.Chapters/Expansions abounds.

The very fact that I would have to start over without anything on my original account would simply cause me and chances are,a majority of other players to simply not purchase GuildWars 2,and move on to greener pastures.

Chances are a Diablo III or other highend RPG would be out within those 2 years.

According to RUMORS GW2 will be set hundreds of years in to the futuer from GW so NO, no old men/women trying to beat the new game in wheelchairs

Yes we should be allowed to take them to the next game.
If it was any other online game i would say no but guild wars 1 could end up being one of the shortest life span online games ever and that is why.

Most online games will go on for years and years before ending yet with GW we are only getting afew before having to start again. Which makes it seem like a waste of time rather then a investment in something we can enjoy for a long time.

I dont see any problems story wise with it aswell, it could simply be a time portal.
The only tricky piece would be the actual character moving between them.

What i was thinking would be that for GW2 they remake all the character models with whatever new graphics they come up with.
Then when you go between the two your character model would change into the GW2 one or GW1.

Now arena net are probably scared of doing this because of all the old armor and items they would also have to convert into new graphics simple solution though is this.
Make it part of the story that time portals can only change humans no items or armor like in the terminator movies. There would be a special vendor like a bank which would keep your items and armor automaticaly so that when you go though you just pick up your amour and your off.

this way arenanet only has to do character models such as the faces not alot of work and players get to keep there characters. It would also balance the game as characters brought over to GW2 would have no money and would only be given starting armor and weapons.

With all due respect the DnD line of games like BG and NWN are no where near the monsters that GW is. They stuck to the same base classes with a few new additions and such, and to top it all off they didnt have to cater to a persistant world of over 3 million accounts. It was a single-player game for the most part and the mp parts of the game all have files on local computers NOT a huge database.

It's like saying that copy and pasting a file is the same as translating everything by hand into an entirly new language.

No, otherwise the elitest snobs have a leg up, and will continue to scam/abuse the new players.

Is it a correct assumption if most people that want the import function would be PvEers?

i dont think that a few people leaving the game is gonna affect Anet, people leave anyway. And i strongly doubt they will just turn off GW1 when 2 comes out..EQ 1 is still kicking along

What about an option like this? Your allowed to keep your last name and forced to create a new first name. This scenario would be feasible since so many years have passed. You’re a descendant of your great, great, great grandfather or grandmother who was a hero at the time. Maybe at some point in the game after you have leveled up you can be given a series of quests to search for your ancestry leading to a key that can unlock your storage account. In all likelihood though it would be a totally separate game. Think of EQ and EQ2. No link there.

Start the poll in the PvP section, or on a PvP board and find out.

My guess would be "yes" and I'd bet 100k against anyone who thinks otherwise.

I'd also bet 100k on the percentage for import function would be higher on GWO.

Wait: Is everyone already assuming that one "article" was anything resembling truth?

Personally, if there is a GW2 alredy, i think i pass. I've ben gathering skills and points for all my characters over the last year, starting over was not what i counted on when GW promised me a continuing story with endless new chapters.

I think some of you are missing the 'big picture' here. Not everyone will transfer across to Guild Wars II, therefore existing Guilds and their Alliances could and probably would break-up. No Guilds = No 'Guild' in Guild Wars.

Warning: An early announcement of a GW2 with NO crossover from GW1 will destroy our existing game.

Observation: If Guild Wars is a streaming game, then why have a Guild Wars II? They can just update the existing one.

If you were promised endless chapters you must be rather new to PC gaming, at least without the possibity of a sequel.

I will say this tho just because a sequel gets made doesnt mean that it'll last longer than the original. (AC/AC2?)

Exactly. That's what i assumed from the start: Always "Guildwars" with a subtitle, not numbers. Continue to play it untill the net get's EMP'ed by terrorists. You can gradually modernise the engine over time too. Why does anyone need more eyecandy anyway? No one cares about it. I never saw a tread complaining about graphics.

@EPO Bot - a new game does not have to mean the death of the old. ANet could keep the current game servers going as long as they make a profit.

Which would mean at least one new chapter a year to generate new income from current players and attract new players who would then buy older chapters.

I vote fresh start (it would be a new game) and the ability for existing players to reserve their names. But that's just my opinion

what would be cool is if we could have our old characters as usable heroes. they could have the ghostly appearance like the primeval kings and such. i realize its not easily done, but i can dream. other than that scenario, i think we should get a fresh start.

Game sequels--as opposed to new chapters--should be separate. It's a new game with a new story. I'd like things to be fresh.
